If you use your own vehicle for work, you can claim a mileage allowance from your employer or HMRC. LifeAxis logs your business trips and handles the calculations automatically — including the correct rate for your vehicle type.
HMRC rates applied automatically
LifeAxis uses the HMRC approved mileage allowance rates for the 2026/27 tax year:
| Vehicle type | Rate |
|---|---|
| Car or van | £0.55 per mile for the first 10,000 business miles, then £0.25 per mile |
| Motorcycle | £0.24 per mile (flat rate) |
| Bicycle | £0.20 per mile (flat rate) |
The rate is determined by the vehicle you are logging the trip against — LifeAxis picks it up automatically, so there is nothing extra to configure. The financial year runs from 6 April to 5 April. LifeAxis tracks where you are in the year and applies the correct band to each trip.
Passenger allowance
If you carry a colleague as a passenger on a business trip in your car or van, you can claim an additional £0.05 per mile on top of your standard mileage rate. When logging a trip, toggle Passenger to include this — it applies to cars and vans only, in line with HMRC rules.
Tracking claims through to payment
Each mileage claim moves through three stages:
- 1Pending: logged but not yet submitted
- 2Reclaimed: submitted to your employer or HMRC
- 3Paid: payment received
You can update individual claims or use bulk actions to mark multiple claims at once.
Your mileage summary
The mileage tracker shows your totals for the current financial year:
- Total business miles logged
- Total claimable value in pounds
- Breakdown by claim status
Odometer history
Every mileage entry also contributes to your vehicle's odometer history, which feeds into service interval tracking and the vehicle health score.
